Our Solution
Increase Arizona's House of Representatives by apportioning members based on a county's total voter count in the latest election for state governor. Counties with multiple representatives may establish legislative districts to ensure proximity between constituents and their representatives. Every county must establish a redistricting committee to provide local control of its representation.
Important Consideration
The House Project considers that Maricopa County is home to almost twice as many people as the rest of Arizona combined. If we change how representation works to reflect where people live, Maricopa County would get many more seats in the Arizona House. Smaller counties like Greenlee, with fewer than 10,000 residents, would have fewer seats. Some people have asked if this means county lines should be redrawn—and while that may be a conversation for the future, that’s not what we’re working on right now. Our focus is on restoring the house of representative back to the principle of apportionment by population.
